Meet, Greet, and Discuss: "None of the Above" Belly Dance

Monday, July 14
NOTA Bene: "None of the Above" belly dancers' working group

Williamsburg or Lower Manhattan location TBD
7 pm

Are you interested in belly dance that doesn't easily fit into a mainstream category? Using, in whole or in part, ethnic, folklore, cabaret or tribal moves to create something that isn't right for an ethnic, cabaret, or tribal venue or audience? Creating work that is alternative and/or fusion, but that doesn't quite fit in with (or is entirely different from) the more familiar goddess, fantasy, archetype, and/or gothic themes? Looking for a creative community?

Hostesses Autumn Ward and Melissa Voodoo invite other "none of the above" artists for an informal meet and greet on Monday, July 14 from 7:00 to 8:30ish. Lower Manhattan or Williamsburg location to be determined based on volume of response.

Our definitions are loose and our scope is broad; our general goal for the evening, though, is to connect innovators who are doing (or want to be involved in) unorthodox performances that happen around the creative margins of the bellysphere. We're hearing from a lot of dancers who say they want to "do something," and we want to connect you. Of course, we are also interested in finding dancers, thinkers, and other movers and shakers for our own projects. (Autumn is developing new theatrical ensemble pieces for 2009, and Melissa is working on a showcase for like-minded performers. We are NOT auditioning or casting at this meeting, but we are looking to shape our plans by learning more about who/what is out there.) So, if you'd like to work with us, come! But, if you're more interested in your own or different projects, also come!

Our specific agenda for the meeting will be to share what resources participants seek and have to offer in terms of:

-talent
-collaboration
-classes and educational opportunities
-venues
-funding
-inspiration
-identity forging
-crossovers with non-ethnic dance, theater, variety, neo-vaudeville, and burlesque

Please RSVP to autumn@autumnward.com if would like to attend, or just want to get on an email list for this group.

Please forward and repost this announcement!

Roomate anyone?

Hello all!
I posted a blog just recently, looking for a roomate or two in several states including New York. I prefer NJ or NY. Im looking for people in my age range that are looking for a reliable roomate. I was in a situation in the past where I moved in with two people that already lived there. That didnt work out because they had strict rules. Id rather move WITH someone so we can both start fresh and BOTH make the rules as we go. I must admit, I do love clubbing. So I like to be able to come and go as I please. Im easy to live with. Once I find a bellydance community that I love, I'll probably never be home at all...LOL! Also, I have TONS of crap, so I will need a large room and prefer to have a room strictly used for practicing. Anyone interested? Please message me. My lease is up come August, but I can wait a little longer than that. In NY, prices are high, so maybe three people can work. Your thoughts?
Thank you.

In DC, but...Totally Turkish weekend with Artemis Mourat

Shems (a DC dancer) is sponsoring some kick-ass workshops next weekend with Artemis. I know it's a few hrs. by car or train, but I wanted to spread the word outside of the DC region as well, since Artie doesn't do these too often:

Hello Dancers,

June 28th and 29th, 2008 (that right in two weeks) I'd like to do some Turkish Master classes with Artie at her studio in Silver Spring, MD, but I need some other dancers who are interested in getting down in a Turkish way to help fill the rest of the class. It would be 3 hours each day starting at 2pm - the first two hours movement breakdown and dance, the last hour watching video footage, the cost $35 per day. If you can come to one or both days please email me at shemsdance at gmail dot com - so I can make sure we have enough folks to run the class. Please, please forward this info on to anybody you think might be interested, students, friends or peers.

Indian Style Silk Gypsy Belly Dance costumes and I'm moving to NYC!

Hi! I'm moving to NYC this July and am excited to connect with the belly dance community in NYC.
I've started designing belly dance Indian Gypsy style silk and sequin saree costumes on my last trip to India. I'm in green modelling with 3 of my students. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the process... from noisy smelly rickshaw rides to vibrant intense immense crowded markets to the sensory overload of rooms overflowing with sequins and silk fabrics and working with my wonderful tailor Ganu. I go mack to India in October 2008 and the plan is to make many more, with different designs. I'd love your feedback about them!

It features Milo Destanovski - teacher, musician, community leader, and director of the Malesh-Roma folkloric troupe. FREE.

WHO IS PAOLA BLANTON?
This fiery Macedonian immigrated to the U.S. as a young child. Passionate about their native Balkan folklore, her family trained Paola and her two sisters extensively in Balkan dance forms, including the kolo circle dances and chochek, the Roma-inspired dance featuring hips, swirly hands, and feisty rhythms with heavy Ottoman influence. As a college sophomore in Chicago, she took her first MED class from Jasmine Jahal, Chicago’s pioneer belly dance performer and teacher. That was the beginning of a lifetime love affair with Raqs Sharqi, or Middle Eastern Dance.

While Paola has studied with many MED greats, one of the most profound influences on her dance comes from a teacher she's never met in the flesh - Isadora Duncan. Three summers immersed in Duncan Dance have imparted a Universal quality to Paola's MED dance, infusing it with the intelligence and emotional intent that Duncan so passionately expounded. The world is taking note. Paola has been invited to share her unique approach at many festivals and workshops around the globe.

The path continues to unfold before her - with inspired vision and joy. Paola's sincere wish for the Dance and its exponents is that it may raise our consciousness and deepen our connection to the rhythms that unite us all as fellow travelers in the Human Venture.
Tribal Belly Dance Classes on Long Island (around Shirley)

My fiancee's family lives in Shirley, NY and while visiting them, I'd love to continue taking my belly dance classes. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to take ATS or Tribal Fusion around Shirley? I'm not too familiar with the area (I live in San Francisco) and I am totally willing to travel about 45 minutes to get to a class. If no one knows any tribal classes, I'd take any classic or cabaret class recommendations too. Thanks in advance! Gen.

I AM LOOKING FOR A TRUST WORTHY GEAT PERSONALITY PERSON TO RUN MY BOOTH THIS NEXT WEEKND OF JUNE 7 & 8TH AT THE LONG VALLEY RENN FAIR IN NORHT JERSEY. BELOW IS WHAT I SELL

ALSO- i just moved to the East coast, I had a store Soul Kiss In Atlanta for the last 15 years and just recently decided to close it to be nearer to my family. I am starting to do Festivals now and not familiar with what Fest's are happening for the rest of the summer that are good for vending in these here parts of the Norht East!! . So if anyone can give me any suggestions i would sooo greatly apprecaite it !!

Also i am vry interested in being a part of Pennsic but unfortuantly now i have a straght job and can only be out there for a week. I have been told that if i am able to even get a booth still, (which if anyone knows who i would speak to woudl be awesome) !! but if i were under the main Bazzar tent it is possable to find someone to look after my booth and sell it while i am not ther for the first week. I woud set it up on the first weekend and be back for the second week.

Also i am interested in knowing of any suggestions on any great street fest's or music Fest's in NYC, NJ, Penn etc etc

thank you sooo much and Radiant Radiant blessings to you. Also below is a synopsis of what i sell (minus all the pretty graghics ... sorry )

Soul Kiss is blend of goods all finely chosen or made by my own design in various places around the world. If you find me at a Festival, this is what you will see:

\ Soul Kiss Silver - Many of my peices are antique. Much of the very rare and authentically old peices of silver from India are gone, However I am still able to bring incredably rare and old peices to my customers. Many of the peices i get are old sterling silver wedding peices from women in Rhajastan which i find and re-string them into a clevor design of necklaces which are adjustable. Becuase they are adjustable they are like three neck's in one becuase they can be worn as a high choker or many different lengths. When worn as a choker the strands hang down the back. Soul Kiss also carries very unique stones, an awesome eclectic array of earings and rings.
\ Mid priced jewerly - Also very unique designs. Much of of it is made of natural elements such as wood, bamboo and stones. All with a very exotic feel.

\ Clothing - All my own designs. Mostly street wear with a tribal edge. Great all natural japenese style shirts for women, with hand painted wood beaded tyes. Beautiful skirts with panels of very old hand embroidered fabrics the northern Indian gypsy tribes. Lots of Men's too which is rare at Fest's because there are never any great choices for guys!! All made with beautiful natural fabrics. sexy.

\ Beautiful Statues and hand carved masks - All carved out of exotic woods such as mango wood and jackfruit wood etc. All of my carvings i have made in very small villages in the high mountains of Bali. I support many many families and artisans in those villages.

\ Accesories - I carry many various Sacred art scarves from India, I have yummy pashimina's that make great elegant shawls for a light weight but warm cover up for the summer. And great prices too !! Soul Kiss carries alot of antique wedding sari's that are gorgous.
\For the Bellydancers - Depending on the Festival, you will always find great stuf for the Bellydancers. Some of the Fest's more so, depending on which one, but e-mail me and i will let you know which ones. I will always carry exotic adormnents tho that are not readily seen at most or all fest's !! So please visit me soon

Thanx Sheri Poole

Soul Kiss World Imports

P.S - Please let me know if you know of any other music Fest's or great street Fest's that you have been to!! I am new to the East Coast and just learning where and when all the great Fest's are !! Thanx and hope to C you Soon !!

I am still kinda new to performing, believe it or not, for those of you who know. I moved to NJ and am having problems being as known as I was in DC/VA/MD metro areas. How does one promote herself without seeming cocky? I want to promote myself better than I have in the past, as I let a controling boyfriend promote for me. He is out of my life and I want to start promoting for myself. I feel I have a lot to offer women all around the glode, as I feel some teachers and society can be discouraging, and I am full of encouragement How can I promote myself better so perhaps I can be lucky enough to get on one of the World Dance NY DVD's? I feel Im ready. But dont know how to say so without people thinking Im pushy or cocky or even undeserving. What do you do when you want public recognition other than small gigs? I have a phobia of promoting myself, which is how all international dancers have made it. Any advice would be great. But Im not here to get shot down. Positive advice has a better impact. Thank you. Ladies? What did you do to get on tours and known through the US and even world?

I am currently taking Tribal Belly Dance classes with two ( soon to be three) different teachers. While I certainly love the technique and different style each teacher brings to the class I was wondering if I am doing myself more harm than good by studying under different teachers. Any advice would be helpful!!

Thanks :)

ZILS TECHNIQUE workshop with ELSA LEANDROS, Apr.5 NYC

Venus Uprising presents: ZILS TECHNIQUE workshop with ELSA LEANDROS!

This workshop will cover the foundations of using zils (finger cymbals) in the various bellydance rhythms used in performance: baladi, saidi, maksoum, masmoudi, ciftetelli, and karsilama (9/8). Elsa will offer tips and shortcuts to learn how to play zils in a unique, rhythmic and professional way. You will learn how to switch from just using mostly one leading hand, which inhibits the speed needed for the latest Arabic pop, fusion and Turkish gypsy music, to using both hands in an equal, balanced manner. This process will be easy, logical, and fun!
Once each rhythm is completely understood, and felt to the point that your hands have developed some muscle memory, Elsa will then demonstrate a sequence of steps and hand and arm movements to develop coordination between zil playing and dancing.
By the end of this workshop you will have enough information and practice that will set you on your way to becoming an excellent zil playing bellydancer.

Saturday, April 5th, 2008
12:30 pm - 2:45 pm; registration 12:15 p.m.

Are you afraid of drum solos? Check out our workshop this Saturday!

Back in the days when I started I was fascinated by live Drum Solos. To me, they are the ultimate bellydance improvisation. I loved the moment when the dancer turned from a floating cloud into a sharp, articulate instrument... and a fun one at that!

Last year Carmine and I started talking about Drum Solos. Over lattes, we had many conversations about improvisation, performance and how Drum Solos are put together. We shared our own experiences from the viewpoint of a musician and a dancer, talked about how we found Drum Solos very challenging when we first started and noticed how often we've encountered students who are afraid of them.

Our conversations centered around ways to provide students with tools that would accelerate their training. We talked about ways to give in one workshop all the insights and techniques that we've come up with through our years performing. We taught our ideas in several cities in Mexico (we've been asked to go back and teach more) and will be teaching our first NYC workshop this Saturday.

Carmine believes that listening is an essential skill. For him it's not enough to tell the dancer to listen; he teaches what to listen for: cues, changes, hints... and of course, the rhythms.

Another one of the tools we'll be teaching is a series of connected phrases that the dancer can draw from as she improvises. As they become ingrained in the dancer's body, she no longer has to think about them when she is performing. By connecting the movement phrases with the rhythms, they become memorable and the dancer gets a clearer understanding of them.

In Carmine's words: "Often after I play for dancers, people from the audience will say: 'You and your wife were great!'
They see us so connected they assume we must live together and practice all the time. The trick is to make it look like we practiced even if we didn't. I really want to teach drummers and dancers how to do this".

We're both very excited about sharing this workshop and look forward to having fun with you this Saturday. There will be lots of "Ah ha!" moments and surprises!
Aubre has been studying movement her entire life, everything from Bellydance, Jazz, Tap, Hiphop, Social dance, Ballet, Musical Theatre, Pilates, and Yoga. She is a lifelong student of Suhaila Salimpour and teaches bellydance technique based on the Suhaila format. The blend of her influences creates a strong basis for dynamic and innovative performances and teaching. With over 14 years of teaching experience and a broad background of movements, she gives her students the tools they need to progress and grow. With years of experience in jazz and the world of musical theatre, she passes along key elements to creating artistic and intriguing performances. Her classical Pilates training greatly influenced her own practice and thus the work she could offer her students, including injury prevention and rehabilitation.

Aubre is on faculty at California State University, Los Angeles teaching accredited bellydance and Pilates classes as well as teaches a full bellydance program at The Center of Worldance. She can also be seen on fitTV's "Bellydancing with Aubre: All Star Workouts." And recently released her first instructional dvd, "Bellydance Core Fitness."
Fantasy Bellydance DVDs - Instructional series - WDNY x-post

Dear friends, in March (March 25) World Dance New York (http://www.worlddancenewyork.com) is releasing 3 instructional dvds from our upcoming Fantasy Bellydance series.

The series features 9 instructors, including our New York instructors - Neon, Sera, Ayshe, Blanca, Naraya, Darshan and Autumn Ward.

I've uploaded the DVD covers to our Tribe album and here is a brief overview:

Each DVD teaches 3 dances by 3 instructors - a mix of classic bellydance, fusion, Tribal , and Gothic.
The level is intermediate-advanced.
The dances conjure up evocative archetypal images, and focus on story-telling through dance.
Along with a performance cut, demonstration and break down of each choreography, there are various additional features in each instructor's section - such as tips on props use (hand veils, sword, Isis wings), expression and projection, creating sacred space for dance, treating dance as a personal ritual, dance as an inward journey, and other.)

HI! My name is Zaria!

I currently live in Northern California but I am soon to be moving to New York City for school in August. It's a big move but I am so excited I love the city! I have been doing middle eastern dance for about four years and whle i am pretty familiar with the California dance scene, I am not so familiar with very many dancers on the East Coast, so I figured this would be the perfect tribe to maybe get to know some new people! I currently am a student of the wonderful Shoshanna and part of her Raks Amar dance troupe. Anyways I just wanted to say hi and I look forward to maybe seeing some of you perform sometime! Thanks for listening! Happy Dancing!
xoxo

Hello. I'm Inanna from Kansas City, a dancer and photographer. Just got very last-minute word there is a place for me in Lois Greenfield's dance photography workshop in New York City.

If you're not familiar with her name, you may recognize some of her wonderful images: http://www.loisgreenfield.com/galleries/index.html

Anyway, there is a place for me in the workshop. I've found affordable airfare. But -- this being New York -- I'm having trouble finding a place to stay. The studio where the workshop will take place is in the Chelsea/Flatiron district. And I can't find anything there that isn't already booked up or is too expensive. I'm looking to pay no more than $200 a night for a room.

So, I'm wondering if any of you have any suggestions? I'm thinking I can find a room elsewhere in the city and take the subway. But I'm not familiar with the subway stops. For example, I'm wondering if I find someplace in Brooklyn, would that be convenient by public transportation? If I stay out near the airport, is there public transportation other than taxis to the Chelsea District? Any suggestions from those of you who know the city would be most appreciated.

Healing with Bellydancing.....

Hey girls!!!! You're all so beautiful....I'm new to the scene, so I'm just getting to meet you all.

I've been researching the subject on line, so I don't feel so lonely. A girlfriend suggested I post about it, so I can see how many others share the healing stories of Bellydancing.

So far, I've seen stories from cancer patients....sssoooo touching!!! I've also come across some senior citizen stories of bellydancers, and it bring such joy to me to see this all. Bellydancing....I would say....is the BEST physical therapy for any woman, any age.

My story...the short version....10 years ago, my lumbar spine was blown out (ruptured discs)in a car accident, I was hit from behind, twice, by a truck.
4 years ago, I had an extensive lumbar spinal fusion, so I could stand up straight, without the support of a cane. Metal rods, screws, cement, the works! About 3 months after my surgery (I had to learn to walk all over again, they cut all muscles), still in my body cast, I bellydanced to my first DVD.

I lost about 130 pounds in the past 4 years, because of my dancing. Although I still live with alot of pain , when I dance, I feel no pain. When I look at myself in the mirror wearing a pretty hip scarf and a bindi, I feel no pain.

So....share with me, with us......tell us your stories of healing with Bellydance. I think it's a subject that needs to be put out there....some people truly don't understand this sacred dance, and what it is capable of.

Ranya and Middle Eastern music like it should be....

Just got back from the Lafayette Grill tonight, where Ranya's show was just outta sight!
Her dancing shows that she put years of hard work and dedication [too many would be artists don't know this word anymore, sadly] into her art. But, aside from her magnificient performance, she also put together a show the likes of which New York has not seen in years.
Her students all seem to reflect her sense of integrity, and, if they are smart, they will stick with her longer than many so called dancers out there [2 lessons & I'm a star] Being a star [an upstart] is not the same as being an artist. Ranya proved to me, and everybody present in the crowded room, beyond any doubt, that she is an artist, and clearly, a fine teacher as well.
Her program reflected that very essence of all Egyptian art forms...love of life, passion, joy.
Her guest dancers were just as much a joy to watch and experience.

Her sense of joy extended to her musicians as well. An ensemble made up of true masters of Arabic music...
Oudist and vocalist Maurice Shadid, violinist Mohammad Abdullah, Neboui on acordion [I'm partial!] and a percussion section to die for ...Gamal Shafik and Said Fahmy, and Nikolai Ruskin on frame drum and beautiful nai solos, singing, and zurna playing too.

These musicians seemed to move through the various pieces by Said Darwish, Abdul Wahab, and Riad Simbati effortlessly, and they enjoyed every minute of it. Here was real class, guys who put in years of woodshedding, and it was evident last night.

It takes years to get to that stage of soulful playing. These musicians didn't have the internet to plug them or super market themselves to the world, and thereby create a make believe world of super-stardom for all to see, no. And, maybe they ain't gonna be the next renaissance [unfortunately] in popular music. But, I put my belief in them, because they have substance. And, dear readers, you can hear and experience it when you listen to them, or watch Ranya's show, because you know it's great art.
I do hope that Middle Eastern music in New York will follow the Ranya experience, because there is a real need to return to the days of integrity and respect for what culture is. If you, like me, feel sometimes that all is lost, go to a Ranya show, you'll be glad you did.

They say you can drink wine after 40 days, that is, it takes that long for the grape juice to ferment. You can drink it, to be sure, but that 40 day old vintage can't ever compare to an old, aged, carefully plugged cask. The same with music and dance.Put in the time and effort, and it shows.
Ranya, kudos to you 100x and then some, you are keeping integrity in the New York Middle Eastern arts, and thereby, keeping the scene truly alive.

Big Moves (www.bigmoves.org) is a Boston-based dance company that is the only producing, training, and service organization in the world dedicated to getting more people of all sizes into the dance studio and up on stage. Our spring show, the "Big Top," is touring in NYC and Philadelphia. We are looking for one plus-sized belly dancer of intermediate training and experience to perform with us in each tour stop. The NYC shows take place on May 2 and 3. This is a paid gig.

If you are interested in performing with us, please contact me, Amy Smith, at info@bellydancenewengland.com. I am one of the founders of the Caravan of Curves, the belly dance contingent of Big Moves. We can discuss show specifics offline.

Hi Folks,
We recently released a debut album. It's a mix of electronic and arabian styles. We're hoping it might appeal to the tribal and belly dance community, and also people that are
